*Judaism's Calendar as ordained by HaShem relys on the cycles of the moon.  The new moons arrival is welcomed with special prayers and is refered to as Rosh Chodesh (new month).  Rosh Chodesh is observed for either one or two days.  When there are two days, the first is the last day of the previous month.  In synagogues, on the Sabbath before the new moon, a special prayer called the Birkat Ha-Chodesh' is said to announce the new moon.
